As far as Microsoft coming to Cambridge goes, it seems that
Roger Needham, head of the Computer Lab, was more of a player
in putting the deal together than Hawking and the DAMTP team.

Also I hear that the amount available from MS is GBP10-20 million provided
the University finds funds too. Someone reminded me of the
"Swinnerton-Dyer Crescent", the plan from the mid 80's by then
Vice CHancellr Peter Swinnerton-Dyer to relocate all science teaching
to the West of Cambridge: MS new research lab and a new science
faculty would go well together over there, freeing the New Museums site
for other stuff (redvelopment? surely not).

But enough local politics - the real issue is what this means
for IT development in Europe, or whether it's more like getting your
coding done in India because prices are lower and the workforce
more amenable. After all, the fruits of this remarkable endeavour
are going to be wending their way back to Seattle...
