Online Firm Tries Political E-Mail

[April 1--USA TODAY] Juno Online Services wants to make money by turning
its 4.6 million subscribers into political activists.

Based on a wide range of demographic information collected from people who
sign up for the free e-mail service, Juno already directs highly targeted
online ads. Now, interest groups can pay Juno to send subscribers the
equivalent of direct-mail political pitches.

Unlike direct mail, recipients can immediately find out more about an issue
or message lawmakers directly.

"E-mail campaigns are becoming a thing in Washington," says Roger Stone,
director of the Juno Advocacy Network and a campaign veteran. "What we're
doing is giving people a way to do it better."
