Dear All:

It's been exciting to watch the explosion in activity on UK-POLICY. As
moderators it's our job to ensure the space remains useful and interesting
for the majority of participants at any time. We rely on contributions
from participants to know how to do this. Please feel free to contact me
at this address, Bill Thompson at bill@netnexus.org or
nexus-core@netnexus.org with any ideas/complaints/suggestions.

As we've been anticipating a time when increased activity would create
pressure on people's ability to participate, there is an option to join
uk-policy digest, rather than uk-policy. This list forwards to you all
messages sent to uk-policy in one e-mail each day which makes it easier
for busy people to keep up. If interested, switch to digest at the
UK-POLICY subscription centre:

Two functions it seems are being developed here, and they may be at cross
purposes. One is to create a platform for debate of the highest
caliber. The other is to create a self-organising platform for free and
open debate. It's questionable if one e-mail list can be both things for
a sustained period of time, but it's possible to create multiple e-mail
lists for multiple purposes and create gateways between them. For
example, we could create uk-policy-third way as a moderated forum to
discuss the leading ideas on the development of the third way. This could
be gatewayed to uk-policy-general, which could be an open subcription /
open submission e-mail forum.

For now and in the future, please be considerate of fellow participants.
This is supposed to be a civic sphere. That means it's more for the
discussion of ideas and events than for advertising. It's also important
that we try to argue our points civilly, avoiding hostile commentary
which often demonstrates the victory of emotionalism over the quality of
ideas. Finally, there is a large audience here, and it is courteous to
keep that in mind and take exchanges that are becoming increasingly
specific to a small subset of individuals to private e-mail.

Our work is to be of service to our audience, so we'll make any
future adjustments according to your input and our analysis of what it
will take to sustain the well-being of UK-POLICY. Please keep us
informed on your needs.

Thanks

Scott Aikens
